Social Media Mobile Applications

Summarizing our last post, staying connected in one’s personal and professional network is something that everyone seems to have a passion for. There are many social media sites our there today to fill these needs and most of them have a similar business model.  Each company’s goal is to win the account registration of everyone on the planet; and honestly, for the most part, they have accomplished this. However, the “big-named” networks are seemingly leaving behind other social media network sites that only have a web browser page. Those who truly have succeeded with their niche are the ones who have developed mobile applications for interacting through their app. Let’s take Facebook for example; whether it’s on your phone, tablet, or computer, you have a plethora of ways to connect through Facebook each and every day. The same type of statement could be made for Twitter, Pinterest, etc.
Without the use of mobile applications that can be installed directly to your device’s storage drive, many social media networks are unable to keep up with the latest fad or technology. Networks that are only accessed through an actual website are considered obsolete or “useless” in some cases. Instagram is a good example of this concept. Even though Instagram has a fully functional web page for users to login and create virtual lifestyles (pictures, posts, comments, etc.), most of their users have the mobile application in which they usually use. Some people are unaware that Instagram even had an actual web site; they simple thought that the mobile app was the only form of existence. Similarly, Snap Chat has become a worldwide phenomenon with almost every mobile phone owner having an account. This app is used almost, if not more, than any other app on the market. The beauty of many of these apps is that they are free or cheap to install and use. A company that enables users to use their app for free gains a competitive advantage over increasingly high prices for their competitors’ apps.

  1. do you think this virtual lifestyle could be bad for the business world when it comes to professionalism and getting hired out of college, when companies can easily go and see all of the pictures you post on instagram..etc..?

    1. my facebook, twitter, and tumblr is my personal life and thought. the people in my facebook twitter, and tumblr is friends and likes; they are different from me completely because after college, unversity and high school, we head off in different journey of life. if one of my friend make bad decision in, employer catalog me into that particular person and i do not get the job because of it.

  2. I would agree that having a mobile app is very important. In my personal life, I use social networking sites on my phone much more than I use them on my laptop. Our society is becoming more mobile driven, and businesses need to respond to that.

  4. I'm really interested in the idea of Apps for Business as it pertains to how Businesses can develop and use their own apps for business, rather than simply using modern office software. For example, what is the value in developing mobile app vs a webpage. Certainly, if the app exists users will use it more, but that doesn't mean they will use the web site less if the app doesn't exist. In other words, there has to be a marginal benefit to developing mobile apps. I recently heard Ms. Johar relate the value of mobile apps over websites being the ability of Apps to access more information on the user's mobile device (which it can't do via a traditional browser restricted website). This is compelling to me because it has finally given me the ability to understand the broad reasons why it makes sense for a small business to invest in its own app.

While accessing that data via an app would be easy enough to learn,I'm curious about the broad logistical process of storing and leveraging that data. The type of data generated would be big data. What scalable, affordable options exist for mom-and-pop shops to store and leverage that type of data?

  5. I can agree and relate to your post! One of the very first things that I did when I got my new iphone was download the facebook, twitter, and istagram apps; hey what can I say, I'm addicted to social media! And the easy-to-use mobile apps feed my addiction! I've never really visited the main instagram website in fact.. I always visit instagram via the mobile app!

  6. Although I most frequently use the mobile apps for social networks, I like the option of being able to use it on a computer, tv, etc.

    1. I think windows is trying this with the desktop apps in Windows 8, not a very popular thing.

  7. Imo, its much easier to use mobile apps rather than on the computer unless you have to do a lot of typing/work. Its convenient and like you stated, free! Those are the 2 best things you could give to people.
Also, I've tried accessing Instagram through my laptop and it is simply not the same. Its useless. There is not many options through the computer. Last i checked, I can't edit my settings or upload a picture. Maybe it's updated now, but that was the beauty of Instagram for me!

  8. I agree that mobile apps are the way to go. I have switched banks, credit cards and other needed services to ones that offer mobile apps to do business. However, as far as Facebook goes I believe they have actually regressed because of their recent messenger app. I hated using it and therefor stopped using Facebook all together because I could read messages without using the app. I wish the app was optional to those who liked using it. I liked the simplicity of using one app for all of Facebook.

  9. I'm the only one out of my friends who prefers to use the website forms of social media over the apps. Yes they look differently, but I somehow like the feel of them. Do you think most people choose the mobile apps because of simplicity or just out of convenience?

  10. Are social media APPS just for Tablets and smartphones, or can they also be useful for desktops and laptops?

  12. I think nowadays people mostly use apps, I personally use apps more then actually going on their website through the internet browser. There are a selective few websites that I use, ie social media sites, google, etc. Its way more easier to access these websites through there apps. People also like simplicity, apps tend to be a simple version of the actual website, thus making it more user friendly.

  13. Using the social media apps on a phone is not only convenient and easier, but it also saves more data room. This would especially be beneficial for a phone plan without the unlimited high-speed data.
